Well commonly known as gum disease, periodontal disease is a condition that occurs mostly in adults and can also sometimes occur in children and teenagers. It is the no 1 cause of loss of teeth in adults according to the Academy of Periodontology.
Gingivitis is the first stage where you may notice blood when you brush your teeth. If neglected, it can further progress into periodontitis. You may notice that the gums are swollen, red and even painful. If treatment is not done at this stage, chances are you may loose your teeth. If you have these concerns, we highly recommend you to make an appointment at Dr Pai's office at Broadway Family Dentistry and prevent the disease from further progress.
If periodontal disease is not treated patients end up loosing teeth and needing restorations like partial dentures, dentures and implants. All these treatments are more expensive than taking care of your oral health with simple 6 month dental check-ups. So it is very important to maintain a regular 6 month check up and regular cleanings.
Also there has been an established link between untreated gum disease and other medical conditions like increased risk of stroke and diabetes.
Generally, we recommend getting a deep cleaning which involves scaling and rootplaning. This removes most of the tartar, stains and bacteria. After the deep cleaning, we recommend that you use a oral medicated rinse and come back for a check-up in 6 to 8 weeks. Home health care routines like brushing and flossing will be reviewed. Most patients when they follow these instructions can halt progression of the disease and maintain their oral health for the rest of their life.
